Using genomics to improve the profitability and sustainability of Alberta’s beef industry

Project Details

Status: Active
RDAR Investment: $2,199,950
Commodity: Beef Cattle
Organization: University of Alberta
Investigator: John Basarab

Livestock Gentec, a research group established at the University of Alberta, is bringing the permanent and additive benefits of genomic selection tools to the Canadian Beef Industry. Livestock Gentec has developed genetic selection tools that can help beef producers select animals to improve their economically relevant traits, including feed efficiency, fertility, and longevity.

This new project is focused on supporting the adoption of genomic tools by commercial beef producers.

To achieve these outcomes, the research team will:

  1. Develop improved genomic selection tools through

  2. Evaluate the developed genomic selection tools against commercial data

  3. Demonstrate the economic performance of the genomic selection tools

  4. Drive Adoption through partnerships with industry to facilitate the uptake at the commercial level

By partnering with veterinarians, industry service providers, and industry groups, the project will deliver training, support, and easy-to-use reports that turn genetic data into practical, herd-specific advice. In short, the goal of the project is to deliver genomic selection tools to commercial beef producers to improve their competitiveness and sustainability to help pull genetic improvement through the beef chain.

Financial support for this project is distributed by Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR), with funding from the governments of Canada and Alberta through the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership (Sustainable CAP).
