Ruminant feeding trials in support of livestock feed ingredient registration for hemp hulls and screenings

Project Details

Status: Completed
Investment: $55,000
Commodity: Specialty Crop
Organization: Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance
Investigator: Ted Haney

Currently, there are no legal markets for hempseed screenings (producer cost) or hempseed hulls (processor cost).

Why is this research important for Alberta ag?

Hemp farmers must clean hempseed to between 99.5-99.9% purity prior to deliver to hemp food processors. Hemp food processors separate hempseed into dehulled hempseed (food) and hempseed hulls (by-product).

This research aims to produce the required efficacy and safety data required to register these hempseed screenings and hempseed hulls for use with ruminants. Currently, there are no legal markets for hempseed screenings (producer cost) or hempseed hulls (processor cost).

What benefits can producers expect from this research?

This research will eliminate waste disposal costs and create two new revenue streams for the Alberta hemp industry, increasing competitiveness of hemp foods.

How will these research findings reach producers on-farm?

Findings will be shared through partner communication channels, electronic distribution, and presentations.
