Why is this research important for Alberta ag?
PIP Lethbridge Inc. is an ag-tech value-added processor of yellow peas. To date, PIP has invested over $30M and continues to invest further in developing an innovative protein extraction method from yellow peas. This innovated method produces an unparalleled plant protein ingredient that is light in colour, neutral tasting, odourless, and high-functioning.
One key factor of PIP's future success in in their ability to deliver a premium pea protein and do it consistently. PIP's success directly translates into addressing the defined industry need for increasing value-added processing in Alberta. Value-added processing supports the diversification and growth of Alberta's value-added food and bio-industrial processors.
This project will specifically support the ability to increase PIP's product reliability and quality which will support PIP buying more peas and ultimately expanding to the large scale facility.
What benefits can producers expect from this research?
The direct benefit to producers will be the increased throughput and runtime using the new clarification method at the pilot facility, which will directly affect how many peas are able to be processed at the facility.
How will these research findings reach producers on-farm?
PIP is currently in discussions with other companies to facilitate extension.
